What is Speech?

Speech is sound production.  Children can have trouble with sound production if the right body parts are not moved at the right time.  Sound production problems can occur with Voice, Fluency, and Articulation.  Sound production problems can make speech hard to understand.

Voice Problems
can make voices sound rough, hoarse, or nasal.

Fluency Problems
can exist in children who stutter or speak at too fast or slow of a rate.

Articulation Problems
can affect how sounds are pronounced.  Simple articulation problems do not usually affect intelligibility.  More severe articulation problems can make speech very difficult to understand.
